Back to Basics: A New Moon in Aquarius Embodiment Ritual
Happy New Year! Whether you are brand new to this beautiful community or we've journeyed together for years now, hello and welcome. We are so grateful to have you here. May you enjoy each lovingly curated section of this blog post and please take your time with it as it does go deep!
Whether you feel that January is the new year for you or the "new year" begins for you during the spring equinox, your birthday or some other auspicious time of the year, I want to invite you to join me in an intentional practice this new year that I call "going back to the basics." And there is a mini new moon ritual included in today's post to help you deepen this practice.
"Going back to basics" is connected to the practice of mindfulness and presence, about really allowing ourselves to just be where we are in this current stage of our life + healing journey. To meet ourselves exactly where we are at, in the situations life is presenting us with - without trying to avoid, shortcut, bypass, or rush ahead into the next chapter of our lives which we imagine will be more pleasurable or less painful than where we currently find ourselves.
The last two years of global pandemic (and Global Awakening + Ascension) have really been a deeper invitation for humanity around going back to basics, mindfulness, presence. In essence, the pandemic has affected us all, no one alive on the planet right now has been able to outmaneuver it or out-manifest it.
No one.
Essentially life has given us all the directive, "There is no where to run. There is no where to hide. There is everything to face right in front of us."
And you dear wise ones, have the capacity and awareness to see this deeper invitation as the true gift that it is. Not just for you, but for the future of humanity and this beautiful planet we all call home. (And if you need support facing what is right in front of you, we are here for you! Please see the beautiful healing offerings further down in this email).
I'll be talking about "going back to the basics" more in upcoming newsletters and teachings. Today, I want to pause and take a moment to honor the life and legacy of Thích Nhất Hạnh, known by many as the Father of Mindfulness or simply as Thay, which means Teacher in Vietnamese. Thay was a Zen Buddhist Monk, Mystic, Scholar, Poet + Peace Activist. Thích Nhất Hạnh passed away from his earthly body this past weekend at 95 years young.
Thích Nhất Hạnh was a true living master whose work and leadership served as a guiding light to so many, including his friend & peer Martin Luther King Jr. Thay's book Stone Boy & Other Stories is one of my top 10 favorite books (a book that brought me deep healing when grieving the loss of my two brothers at various stages.)
The following passage that speaks so beautifully about one way of "going back to the basics" and that is through the importance of caring for our body through Mindful Consumption:
"In modern life, people think that their body belongs to them and they can do anything they want to it. When they make such a determination, the law (generally) supports them. This is one of the manifestations of individualism.
But, according to the teachings of emptiness, non-self, and interbeing, your body is not yours alone. It also belongs to your ancestors, your parents, future generations, and all other living beings.
Everything, even the trees and the clouds, has come together to bring about the presence of your body. Keeping your body healthy is the best way to express your gratitude to the whole cosmos, to all ancestors, and also not to betray future generations. You practice this precept for everyone.
If you are healthy, everyone can benefit from it.
When you are able to get out of the shell of your small self (ego), you will see that you are interrelated to everyone and everything, that your every act is linked with the whole of humankind and the whole cosmos.
To keep yourself healthy in body and mind is to be kind to all beings....
...wholesome, spiritual nourishment can be found by looking at the blue sky, the spring blossoms, or the eyes of a child. The most basic meditation practice of becoming aware of our bodies, our minds, and our world can lead us into a far more rich and full-filling state than drugs (or alcohol, or binge-watching Netflix or mindless scrolling on "the socials" or over-consuming anything really) ever could. We can celebrate the joys that are available in these simple pleasures."
- Thích Nhất Hạnh from his book Living Buddha, Living Christ

Back to Basics: A New Moon in Aquarius Embodiment Ritual
Here are some questions for deeper contemplation. I invite you to take some time during the New Moon in Aquarius portal to carve some time for yourself when you can get quiet, create a mini-ritual and sit with these following questions. Creating a mini ritual may mean lighting a candle, saying a prayer, doing an oracle or tarot card deck draw, sitting in quiet meditation and then starting to journal.
Then I recommend you pick out 1 or 2 questions that stand out to you and journal about them. These questions can go quite deep, so please do not feel the need to tackle them all at once. The intention is not about perfectionism, but to simply to bringer greater awareness to where you are right now. This practice of "going back to basics" is an ongoing life-long process, not something we master and move on from. This ritual invites you to both think + envision big picture (Aquarius!) and to see how the bigger picture is intimately connected to the most basic parts of our everyday lives. What a beautiful way to honor the current energies of this particular moon cycle:
1. How does the above passage from Thích Nhất Hạnh book Living Buddha, Living Christ correlate to your life and your healing journey RIGHT NOW? Do these words resonate for you? Trigger you? A bit of both?
2. Are there ways you are already practicing more mindful consumption in your life? Is there more you could be doing? Is there perhaps, less you could be doing? (Yes, this is a bit of a paradox. Go with it!)
3. What have the past rather intense two + years taught you about honoring your body, slowing down, presence, mindful consumption, your interconnection with the Earth and all of life (including the pandemic, so many people getting sick, supply chain issues, the UN Code Red report, social distancing, more dramatic effects of climate change, greater awareness of systemic racism and the need to overhaul the "systems," millions of people leaving their jobs, more people honoring Indigenous + ancient wisdom traditions, awakening and ascension symptoms, etc.)?
4. What does mindful consumption mean to you? What does going "back to basics" mean to you? How might these two terms connect with the divine feminine teachings around embodiment, honoring your body, feeling your emotions, trusting your intuition, honoring the Earth?
